Current Quests – Week of 03/30/08

I have to say, the last couple weeks have brought some interesting announcements to the world of role-playing games. Persona 4? A completely new IP from Square Enix? A new Valkyrie Profile game? And here I thought Christmas was in December. At any rate, it’s Sunday, which means it’s time for Current Quests!

Our resident cowgirl, Cortney “Alethea” Stone is currently slogging through the mire that is Wild Arms XF. The game appears to be Wild Arms with a tactical slant, which would be better if it didn’t include what has been described as the “Dumbest Battle Objective Ever”. Up until now, I had considered that the dumbest battle objective ever would have to include, at the very least, men in bear suits juggling pies shaped like countires of the world, but I gather this is something different.

Jordan “J_Sensei” Jackson has been bouncing around between several different games, including Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Mother, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. No word on whether or not this has driven him insane just yet, but we may be locking him away just to play it safe.

Local voice and Shaft afficianado, John “Karlinn” Boske has finished off The Witcher – no word as of yet on its exact level of quality, but initial impressions do seem to point towards a surprising level of witchiness. Mr. Boske is also playing Baldur’s Gate, and has plans to pick up Final Fantasy XII.

T.J. “Nerdboy Himself” Condon has been working his tail off prepping for his local Tekkoshocon, but has also found time to play a bit of GrimGrimoire. The lesson? Never underestimate the magnetism of fairies and magical potions. He’s also planning to pick up Mana Khemia and Chaos Wars, just to tick off the third dimension.

Speaking of future releases, Michael “Slayer of God” Kozinko is waiting with baited breath for Persona 3 FES, as am I. Hopefully its release will encourage other companies to put out the sweet, sweet special editions formerly earmarked for Japan only. At any rate, Slayer’s been killing time with bits and pieces of Breath of Fire IV and Harvest Moon DS.

Next up, Derek “Roku” Cavin, is finishing up Riviera while beating up on game mascots in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There are also dark hints at a mystery game hiding in the shadows, lurking in darksome doorways where none may see it, waiting patiently for the time to strike. Or I could just have been watching too much Sherlock Holmes lately.

And finally on this hit parade, Jerry “XeroZohar” Swain has been playing Ar Tonelico, learning to beat the crap out of foes with music. Generally speaking, the best way to do that is with a tuba, assuming there’s enough room to swing it properly, but I gather Xero’s found a better way.

As for me, I’ve been putting the finishing touches on Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates, for which I hope to have a review for you all very soon. For my next trick, I’ll be picking up Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, which I’ve been hearing some very good things about. Certainly the soundtrack is very good. At any rate, that’s what we have going for the week, and here’s wishing you good fortune in your nerdery!
