In a recent interview, 7th Dragon producer Rieko Kodama and director Kazuya Niinou revealed some of the planning behind the series’ shift from fantasy to a future setting. As part of the jump from DS to PSP, the team felt rebuilding the game from scratch would work better with the new hardware.
More importantly, 7th Dragon was to be a multi-part installment from the beginning. Niinou indicated the original plan was for five installments, with four set in the fantasy environment and the fifth to be more of a side story set in near-future Tokyo. The transition to PSP saw the team shift gears and work on 2020 before developing the other titles.
Vector, Inc’s free-to-play online RPG Seventh Dragon will be available on PC and Mac platforms come December 1. In addition to desktop computers, the game will also be accessible via netbooks and iPhones. The game’s persistent online world will allow players to issue instructions to their characters when going offline and check back later to view their progress.

Sega has revealed a few more details for its upcoming DS game 7th Dragon, which is due out in Japan next spring. It will be a traditional RPG and feature four-member parties that can be filled by characters in one of seven classes: Rogue, Mage, Fighter, Princess, Knight, Samurai, and Healer. Each class will have four different appearances and three skill trees. If this sounds similar to Etrian Odyssey, it’s probably because Kazuya Niinou produced both games.
