The gaming world is filled with unusual mascot characters. Nintendo has a rotund Italian plumber that eats mushrooms to gain power. Sega gave us an insanely fast hedgehog with a surly attitude and a flying two-tailed fox for a friend. However, none are quite so unique, offbeat, or downright strange as the Prinny: the knife wielding, peg-legged, exploding penguins that embody the souls of sinners punished to a lifetime of slavery. Also, they say “dood” a lot. In Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?, the seemingly weakest creatures in the Netherworld star in their own game. If you live in Europe, own a PS3, and have been dying for more Netherworld action, Square Enix has you covered. Disgaea 3 will be published by Square Enix on February 20 for the few people that didn’t import it already.
Nippon Ichi is giving players who missed it the first time another chance at Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories. The game will be getting a PSP port, due out on March 26, 2009 in Japan. No word yet on a North American version of Disgaea 2 Portable, but since the first one made it over, it seems a safe bet we’ll see this one as well. Japanese-reading fans — or ones just who like pretty screenshots — can check out the official site.

NIS America has announced that the Disgaea spin off Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero? for the PSP is coming to North America in February 2009. In it, you lead a squadron of 1000 prinnies in some sort of quest. So far, little is known other than the fact that it’s side scrolling action. There’s an official site with a pretty humorous trailer for your viewing pleasure.

Disgaea is one of those games where grinding plays a huge role. Some players are even so turned off by the concept of having to level up for hours upon hours that they give up and move on to other games. While grinding is a big part of the series, grinding efficiently can cut down the time needed to get through storyline battles to about ten hours, if not less. PAL gamers itching for some Nippon Ichi goodness can get their fill in a few months’ time. It was announced today that PAL territories will be getting Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure for the Nintendo DS and Disgaea DS in spring of 2009.
Nearly five years ago, gamers first got a crack at Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, a quirky TRPG set in the Netherworld. This game mixed a unique blend of humor with tactical combat and defied many of the common conventions of RPGs and of games in general. There really isn’t anything quite like a Disgaea game, and now the series makes its debut on the PlayStation 3 with Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice and improves on the formula in nearly every way. With Disgaea 3 on shelves, we thought we’d drop in and chat with the fine folks behind the game. We were fortunate enough to have some of our questions answered by Jack Niida, Marketing Manager for NISA; Souhei Niikawa, Producer and writer for the Disgaea series; and Steve Carlton, Disgaea series editor with some extra input from the Disgaea 3 dev team. There’s rarely a shortage of quirky news coming out of Japan and this week is no exception. In a bizarre twist, Nippon Ichi has announced that the Prinnies of Disgaea fame will be stealing the spotlight in an upcoming PSP game. “Ore ga shujinkou de iinsuka!”, which roughly translates as “Is it okay for me to be the main character, dood?!”, features 2D characters and 3D backgrounds. It seems that other Disgaea characters will be making appearances, as the first images in Famitsu magazine also feature Etna. Judging by the scans, though, it looks like the game may be an action title rather than an RPG. It’s due out in Japan on November 20 for 5229 yen.
