Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was an interesting experiment back in the days of the GameCube, a system known for its multiplayer prowess. Though the game could be played solo, it was clearly intended to be played with friends, but it came with one tiny hitch. In an effort to promote the GBA and the ill-fated GBA link cable, multiplay required separate GBAs with cables for each player. When the series made the move to the DS, Ring of Fates improved the situation tremendously by providing a game that could be enjoyed solo or with friends, but the multiplayer required a local connection. The third attempt, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, is a valiant attempt to get it right, but in the end, it still falls short. A lot of people have accused Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers of being vaporware, especially since a second Wii title, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time was announced with next to no mention of the earlier game. Well, those that pre-order Echoes of Time when it hits Japanese shelves on January 29 will be treated to a new trailer for Crystal Bearers.

Square Enix announced today that Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time will see simultaneous release for the DS and Wii in spring of 2009. Multiplayer has always been a crucial part of the series, but for the first time, players will be able to join up with friends playing the game on either system. No price has been set, but the game is rated E10 by the ESRB.
Japan’s an expensive place to live, and it can get kind of crowded. So to make up for these things, companies like Square Enix placate the populace with sweet DSi bundles that make pretty much everyone else in the world jealous. Case in point, there are two new bundles for the DSi, a system that we don’t even get until at least the middle of next year over here. The first is a bundle for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and so far, Square Enix hasn’t said what sort of special limited edition DSi it will come with. Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time will also be getting a pretty limited run. It’ll come with the game, a white DS embossed with a cat, all for a suggested 23,940 yen, which is exactly $252 right now.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time has been announced in the latest issue of Shonen Jump. In an interesting twist, the game is coming out for the DS and the Wii. Gameplay will vary depending on whether one is using the Wiimote or the stylus, but it will be possible to play online with those using either version, this thanks to Square Enix’s cross-platform engine, the Pollux Engine. It also looks like players will be able to transfer and use their Miis on the DS version. The game will be an action RPG, and though there’s little information so far, we do know that the plot revolves around Charlotta and (naturally) a crystal.
