In a blast from the past, I spent some time a little while ago replaying Parasite Eve for our yearly Halloween folderol. This was my first playthrough in years, and a number of things surprised me; the prominent placement of the World Trade Towers, for example, and the fact that 1997 is now more than a decade in the past. My friends, I am old. But this playthrough also reminded me of how much fun the PE combat system is. So this week we’ll be taking a look at some of the weapons Aya can use, and how they’ll affect your strategy in battle.

Square Enix has just announced that Dragon Quest: Wars, an upcoming turn-based strategy title employing monsters from the Dragon Quest series, will be available for download through Nintendo’s DSiWare service in October of this year. The game will employ the DSi’s wireless network and Wi-Fi connection, allowing up to four teams to build a party of monsters and battle in the same arena.
While a launch day was not specified, the company stated the title will be available for 500 DSi points.
Super Smash Bros. Melee is not an RPG in any way, shape, or form. So why, you might ask, is it the subject of this week’s column? The answer can be summed up in one word: Marth.

When it was announced, Dissidia: Final Fantasy sounded like an interesting concept: a fighting game starring Final Fantasy characters. At first glance, you might think it is the spiritual successor to Ehrgeiz. You’d be wrong. The only thing this game has in common with that PS1 brawler is the inclusion of Cloud and Sephiroth among the cast. Make no mistakes about it. This is an action RPG at its finest, and for fans that have dutifully played the first ten Final Fantasy games, it’s chock full of nostalgia and gameplay that will keep you coming back.

A new entry to the Disgaea series, under the title of Disgaea Infinite, is coming soon to a Playstation Network near you. Sony lists it as a PS3 title, while the latest Famitsu refers to it as a PSP game. There has been no clarification as to which is the case, however it will debut at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show.

I miss everything that is good and pure in life while flying. Things like a good night’s sleep and Talk Like a Pirate Day. Ah well. Today’s media: Disgaea Infinite, WiZman’s World, Inazuma Eleven 2, and Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku, whatever the heck that means. Observe!

Following up on our coverage of new Pokemon moves, this week we’ll be taking a look at the move tutors of Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver. Though the new moves Pokemon learn by level up and breeding in HG/SS are undoubtedly significant, they pale in comparison to the move tutors this remake throws our way. HG/SS has no fewer than 52 tutors available for use, but only 14 are new, the others being repeats taught by the move tutors of Pokemon Platinum. The new tutors are Super Fang, Pain Split, String Shot, Tail Wind, Gravity, Worry Seed, Role Play, Magic Coat, Heal Bell, Low Kick, Sky Attack, Block, Bug Bite, and Headbutt. We’ll be taking a look at the most useful of these in this week’s Strategy Session.

In preparation for the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix has let the world know that recently announced Xbox 360 title NeiR Gestalt has a sibling: NeiR RepliCant for the PS3. Like NeiR Gestalt, NeiR RepliCant is being developed by Cavia, and is due out sometime next year. Unlike NeiR Gestalt, we actually have some story details for NeiR RepliCant. The game will take place in the distant future, in a world on the verge of collapse. Main character Neir leaves on a journey to find a cure for the deadly plague that has infected his sister. During his travels he will have to deal with sealed scrolls, demonic powers and cursed monsters. At the end, he may just find out some of the truth behind his world.

Square Enix has launched new downloadable content for Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. Available through WiiWare for 800 Nintendo funbucks, The Crystals follows Rydia and Edge as they try to put the band back together, presumably on a mission from God. Meanwhile, Cecil “confronts Kain, Rosa, and Ceodore inside his castle” as the world is thrown into dire peril.
There is no word as to whether said peril will be easily dispatched by using a glitch to duplicate Excaliburs and having Edge throw them every turn.
Nintendo has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be released on December 7, 2009, just in time for the holiday season.
I’m sure I’m not the only relic of the NES era, so let’s go down memory lane together for a few moments. Since it was bundled with the NES system (because back then a bundle inlcuding a game and two controllers was the norm — ah how times have changed!), just about everyone got to play Super Mario Bros. And for many of us, it was the game that first lead us down the path of gaming addiction, which in those days meant we all had very sore left thumbs until we grew a nice callus. This was not, however, Mario’s first appearance. In fact he’d been around for a few years prior, first appearing as “Jumpman” in Donkey Kong back in 1981 and then in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. as Mario, the American-Italian plumber with his brother Luigi. Super Mario Bros. for the NES is what made him a star, though, and he was soon to ascend to the rank of Nintendo’s mascot.
