PlayStation 3 owners looking for a challenge will soon have something new to sink their teeth into. Atlus announced today that Demon’s Souls will be coming to North America this fall.

Demon’s Souls is the self-proclaimed “ultimate hardcore RPG challenge,” combining RPG and action elements along with flexible character customization. It also boasts of a slew of unique online connectivity features: 

Team up with two other players in simultaneous cooperative play, working together to topple some of the game’s colossal bosses, or force your way into the games of skilled players and challenge them to PvP battle.  Leave hints and clues for those who will follow in your footsteps; either intentionally or through your own inadvertent demise, your bloodstains will allow your successors to view a replay of your death, hinting at how to avoid your gruesome fate.  Unprecedented in its depth and subtlety, peerless in its relentlessly challenging gameplay, Demon’s Souls is the ultimate action RPG.  

Demon’s Souls promises open-ended gameplay and a world that changes based on players’ actions via the “World Tendency” system. The system will alter NPCs, special events, the strength of monsters, and the rewards for slaying them. The story takes place in Boletaria, whose king brought a curse on the land when he entered an ancient shrine called the Nexus. There, he woke a creature known only as the Old One and Boletaria was soon shrouded in darkness and overrun by demons. Players must venture into the cursed land and defeat the ancient evil that lurks there.
