Monolith Software Gears Up Xenoblade As All-New Saga

In last week’s Famitsu, Xenoblade director Tetsuya Takahashi provided the first details on Monolith Software’s upcoming Wii RPG. It turns out that Xenoblade isn’t a part of the Xenogears and Xenosaga epoch but rather an entirely new game and universe. “Xeno” seems to be only an homage.

Xenoblade takes place on the corpses of two gigantic gods who defeated each other in battle long ago. Really, that’s the entire world. Humans live on one dead god, while mechanical beings live on the other. According to Takahashi, the world is “overwhelming, like an MMORPG.” Everything — from exploration to jumping in and out of battle — will be seamless with the option to warp back and forth to previously explored areas. In combat, players control one character followed by two AI-controlled party members and battles begin automatically in the field.

Takahashi explained that this title will be different from Xenosaga in the sense that it will be more open and free. It will lack lengthy cutscenes and extensive level-grinding, but it will still be a 50-60 hour game.

Xenoblade is expected to be out this spring in Japan for the Wii.
