Details about the upcoming Final Fantasy Type-0 are coming to light, revealing some of the characters, the game world, and the battle system. 

The main characters are magic students at Suzaku, one of several special schools referred to as Peristylium, and the students are called into action when a neighboring country launches an invasion.  Two of the students have been named: Ace, an aggressive, card-wielding youngster with a calm exterior; and Queen, a sword fighter and straight-arrow leader type.  A teacher, Kurasame, has also been introduced, and he is reportedly a skilled fighter.  He is also accompanied by a tonberry for some reason.

World powers are tied to crystals, and Suzaku is located in one such nation, named Rubrum.  The invaders, Milites, possess another crystal and the Peristylium Byakko, which is dedicated to science.  Anaze and Kogai are the other two powers known so far, along with Peristyliums of dragons and knights, though it’s not known which has which.

Your party is limited to three active members, and battle apparently consists of basic RPG actions: using weapons, magic, and other basic attacks to build up an Ability Gauge, by which you unleash more potent attacks.  More interesting is the revelation that not every enemy will attack on sight.  Some creatures will flee, or can be talked to.  Taking out a leader will end the battle.  Characters’ weapons will have varying effects in the field.  Ace’s cards, for instance, can deliver damage or status effects, and he can even heal others with them.  Queen’s sword limits her to melee range, though she has at least one special attack that simultaneously damages the enemy and heals the party.
