Mass Effect 3’s Endgame Linked Heavily to Sidequests

In an interview with PC Gamer, executive producer Casey Hudson stated that Mass Effect 3’s sidequests will have a significant effect on the ending. Referencing the possibility of character death in Mass Effect 2, Hudson stated that this aspect “became the grade of scale of your success of the end game, and we have something similar here.”

Essentially, players who rush towards the final confrontation with the Reapers can finish the game, but it won’t be as conclusive and may pose additional challenges. Decisions Shepard has made along the way will manifest as opportunities to influence the finale; Hudson cites the Rachni from the first game and the Collector base from the second as examples. Thus, taking the time to sidequest will build towards a bigger, “very definitive” ending.

Also discussed were how Mass Effect 2 DLC was used to experiment with ideas for the next game, that Tali will return as a full squad member, and that the third game will include no new love interests. The interview can be read in full over here.
