Profile
Just your average, lazy, mildly obsessive-compulsive 20-something gamer/writer, with aspirations of doing either of the latter for pay sometime in the near future. I make no secret of my PC gaming heritage, nor the fact that I use 'heritage' improperly to describe a tendency to favor; I believe the proper word there is proclivity. But I digress.

I do that a lot too, by the way.

Anyhow, until further notice I'm your resident editor person who occasionally deigns to review games, but mostly is just here to keep things running as smoothly and error-free as possible. I have a strong fondness for literature of all kinds, have a man-crush on Warren Spector, and possess a soft spot for those games that offer little more than a really cool idea. I'm also one of the nicest, most laid-back people you're going to find without the aid of "herbal supplements", and I'm told I should be in radio.

If only, my friends. *If only*.

Bevy of Fable III News: DLC, PC Port, and Coin Golf

Thursday, February 24th, 2011 by | Posted in Game News

Courtesy of Lionhead’s official blog comes a hefty chunk of Fable III news.  For starters, the first set of DLC, dubbed Traitor’s Keep, will be available starting March 1 for 560 MS funbucks.  Little else is known other than it will feature three new levels – Ravenscar Keep, Clockwork Island, and the Godwin Estate – and involve the player “encountering a mysterious prisoner.”

Additionally, a PC port of Fable III was part of this announcement.  Due out on May 17, the PC version will include a unique Hardcore Mode that ratchets the difficulty even higher.  And last was the reveal of Fable Coin Golf, a minigame of sorts which both lets you transfer money earned into Fable III and unlocks unique weapons in Traitor’s Keep.

Xenogears Stands Tall and Arrives on PSN

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 by | Posted in Game News

Remember the 90s? I know I do: dial-up internet, MTV that actually played music videos, and having to pick sides in console wars because mom didn’t care what your pal Marty had, you were only getting one or the other. And lest I forget, the 90s was also a time of gigantohuge multi-disc RPGs, like for instance Xenogears. I bring this up because Sony announced via official blog that Xenogears is available on PSN starting today.

One long, long trip down memory lane is priced at $10.

Capping Sunday off with some media for you, in hopes that you’re not getting hit with still more snow. Also, does anybody else ever imagine fight scenes and chases set to something classic? Like, a guy jumping through a window and doing a parkour bounce off the far wall and landing in a dumpster, but with “Just a Gigolo” by Louis Prima playing in the background? Sometimes I empathize with the guy from Seinfeld who zoned out every time he heard “Desperado”. But I digress.

Today’s media update: Disgaea 4, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, Everyday Messiah, Tales of Xillia, and Tales of the Abyss 3DS. (more…)

What Happened This Week – China Declines Japan’s Friend Request

Saturday, February 19th, 2011 by | Posted in Game News, Podcasts

People of the internet, how’s it going today?  Got plenty going on this week:

  • Hyperdimension Neptunia looks less weird than advertised.
  • Dragon Age 2‘s demo will hit the million downloads, not that it matters for the bonuses.
  • Social network gaming versus traditional development: who will inspire more premature conclusions?
  • China steals Japan’s spot as the #2 economy in the world, but on closer inspection there’s far more to the story.
  • Sony “not deliberating” a PS4, a man gets stabbed over a text message typo, knock-offs, torrents, and reboots.

Dragon Age 2 Demo Issues Call to Arms

Thursday, February 17th, 2011 by | Posted in Game News

Lots and lots of arms, as it turns out.  BioWare announced today that Dragon Age 2‘s demo will be launched for all platforms on February 22.  Not content with simply letting people know it’s there, BioWare further announced that two special items will be unlocked in the game if the demo reaches one million downloads by March 1.  The two items, books titled “Lothering’s Lament” and “The Far Cliffs of Kirkwall,” grant respective XP and money bonuses when read.

You must log into your EA account while playing the demo for your download to count towards the total, and further information can be found through the official site.  The full version of Dragon Age 2 goes live on March 8 in the US, and March 11 in Europe.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Arranges Console-tan Fights Starting Now

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011 by | Posted in Game News

By way of press release, NIS America announced that Hyperdimension Neptunia is available at US retailers today.  You may recall that Neptunia, a PS3 RPG, focuses on game companies and consoles embodied as robots and cute girls that do battle in the world of Gamindustri, presumably letting players relive their fondest memories of console rivalry.

Neptunia‘s Premium Edition comes with a hardcover art book, and those in the mood for further mind-bending moe mashups can check out the official site this-a-way.

Interview With Mass Effect 3’s Composer

Monday, February 14th, 2011 by | Posted in Game News

Among many things discussed in an interview with the Quietus, musician Clint Mansell revealed that he’s working on the score for Mass Effect 3. Although the game wasn’t the primary topic of the interview, Mansell did talk about how a game’s score can be used to match the proceedings on-screen.  He also mentioned how a key composer he admires is John Carpenter, in that Mr. Carpenter’s movies have a distinct feel to them.

The interview in its entirety can be read here.

Rune Factory Oceans: Adventure, Romance, Farming, and Giants

Sunday, February 13th, 2011 by | Posted in Game News

By way of Famitsu, details have been revealed about the next installment in the Rune Factory series.  Titled Rune Factory Oceans, the game features the expected mechanics – dating, managing a farm, and traditional adventuring – but with a noticeable uptick in scale.  Specifically, the game apparently starts with a giant uprooting your entire island and carrying it somewhere, and said giant is a recurring feature for retrieving things from the bottom of the ocean: ships, sunken islands, and so on.

As for romance, players can marry their love interest of choice and potentially raise kids.  Seasonal events will also take place during the game, such as fishing challenges and swimsuit contests during summer.  An official site has been launched, although the game is currently set only for a Japanese release of Feburary 24 on the Wii and PS3.
