Profile
Just your average, lazy, mildly obsessive-compulsive 20-something gamer/writer, with aspirations of doing either of the latter for pay sometime in the near future. I make no secret of my PC gaming heritage, nor the fact that I use 'heritage' improperly to describe a tendency to favor; I believe the proper word there is proclivity. But I digress.

I do that a lot too, by the way.

Anyhow, until further notice I'm your resident editor person who occasionally deigns to review games, but mostly is just here to keep things running as smoothly and error-free as possible. I have a strong fondness for literature of all kinds, have a man-crush on Warren Spector, and possess a soft spot for those games that offer little more than a really cool idea. I'm also one of the nicest, most laid-back people you're going to find without the aid of "herbal supplements", and I'm told I should be in radio.

If only, my friends. *If only*.

Etrian Odyssey III is a Go

Thursday, December 10th, 2009 by | Posted in Game News

Atlus, apparently under the belief that not enough players have been randomly mauled by FOEs, has announced another installment in the Etrian Odyssey series. With the staff from previous entries all on board, Etrian Odyssey III looks to keep the series staples of venturing into labyrinths in search of things to kill, loot, or kill and then loot. Details are scarce so far, although the player will reportedly be able to explore the waters around the seaside town of Armolode by ship in addition to standard dungeon crawling.

The game is due for a March 4 launch in Japan, retailing at 6279 yen. No information exists regarding a US release.

BioWare has yet to comment on who Captain Anderson will punch out this time.

Dragon Age: Origins – Staff Review

Sunday, December 6th, 2009 by | Posted in Features, PC Reviews, Reviews, Traditional RPG Reviews

Half Baldur’s Gate, half Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Origins hits too many of the right notes for fans of either to ignore. It’s big, it’s epic, it has tight production values, and it does a superb job of creating a unique set of mythos for its world, staple fantasy elements notwithstanding. Unfortunately, a score of small issues drag down much of the game’s interaction and controls, and some aspects of the story aren’t as clever as they think they are. Still, if you can get into the complex, well-written story, Dragon Age will grab you and not let go. (more…)

.hack//Link Coming Later, Demo Out Now

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 by | Posted in Game News

Namco Bandai has pushed back the release date for .hack//Link, the latest and supposedly final installment in the series. The launch currently stands at March 4, however a demo is available through the Japanese Playstation Store.

This would’ve been the ultimate viral marketing campaign if they’d managed to release an actual MMO back in ’07. And somehow surpassed the popularity of World of Warcraft by about ten million people.

New Mass Effect 2 Trailer: Morally Ambiguous Asari Powerhouse

Monday, November 30th, 2009 by | Posted in Game News

Just in case you think BioWare needs to show more things from Mass Effect 2, here comes the latest trailer featuring one of the new recruitable characters: Samara, an Asari biotic who appears to be more morally flexible than a certain other Asari squadmate. The trailer doesn’t suggest much other than that she’s quite powerful and engages in rather Jediesque biotic duels with another Asari.

Whether she’ll have the high ground, however, remains to be seen. In the meantime, the trailer can be found via Gamespot.

Atlus Launches Site, Trailer for Shiren the Wanderer

Monday, November 30th, 2009 by | Posted in Game News

Legend has it that Shiren’s the kind of guy that likes to roam around. Be that as it may, the official website for Atlus’ upcoming Shiren the Wanderer has gone live, and can be found here. According to the site, the Wii title is expecting a February release in 2010, although a specific date has not been announced. The game’s trailer can be viewed either through the website or courtesy of the YouTube.

It probably has no relation to this song, which is a shame.

Harvest Moon: My Little Shop Out Now on WiiWare

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009 by | Posted in Game News

Although not likely to feature singing man-eating plants, Harvest Moon: My Little Shop is available today on WiiWare. Selling for 1200 WiiBucks, the game centers around a shop and farm the player inherits from their grandparents, using what they grow at the farm to sell at the shop. Clearly, a game for those interested in seizing the means of production without involving antique political theory or those pesky Bolsheviks.

Blizzard: “Safe to Say” No Diablo III in 2010

Monday, November 23rd, 2009 by | Posted in Game News

Players waiting to click their way through the next installment of the Diablo series better get comfy. Blizzard’s executive vice president of game design, Rob Pardo, recently confirmed that Diablo III is unlikely to be released before 2011. “We always announce all of our games too early,” says Pardo, but adds that “we know that our fanbase is not going to hold us to a fiscal calendar.”

Today’s lesson, of course, is that when one of your eleven-year-old games is still a competitive sport in Korea, “when it’s done” carries a bit more weight.

NPCast 14: Baldur’s Gate – Better Living Through Ham and Cheese

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009 by | Posted in Podcasts

Hello again, ladies and gents. Dragon Age: Origins is on a few of our playlists, and while I was waiting for it to arrive, I wrapped up my mandated quarterly playthrough of an older Bioware/Black Isle joint. It goes without saying that the Baldur’s Gate series is critically acclaimed, but it’s got problems; big ones that not everyone can overlook. I wonder sometimes how I got past them, how it became one of my favorite series. Was it in spite of its flaws, or because of them?

Do note that this was recorded a few days ago, just prior to the game arriving. In any case, let’s chat, shall we?
