World Destruction Details Emerge

Some of the plot details for Sega’s recently announced World Destruction have come to light. Though nearly every other RPG in the history of the genre seeks to save the world, this game is actually going for the opposite, which isn’t exactly shocking considering the game’s title.

The plot takes place in a world where humanity serves as livestock for a race of beastmen that rule the world. World Destruction follows Kyrie, a man recently recruited by the “World Destruction Committee” to help get rid of the world. In an effort to conform to at least some of the standard practices of RPGs, Kyrie just so happens to be the only person in the world that possesses the power to get the job done.

Kyrie will not be going at it alone. He will be joined by ragtag team consisting of Morte, the heroine of the story; Naja, a half-human, half-beastman that fights on behalf of the world; Agan, a pro-human guerrilla fighter; Li’a, a 300-year-old dragonkin in the body of a 16-year-old; and Toppy, the token mascot that happens to be a bounty-hunting, eye patch wearing bear.

Graphically, the game will feature 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds with promises to push the DS to its limits. In an effort to make good on this promise, Masatoshi Azumi of Grandia fame will be lending his hand to the project. Fans of Etrian Odyssey will be pleased to hear that Shin Nagasawa will be designing the monsters, and as previously reported, they can get big enough to encompass both screens. Kimihiko Fujisaka of Drakengard and Cry On fame is also credited with a special thanks for character design.

Speaking of those monsters, battles will be turn based and waged in teams of three. Characters will be able to use Battle Points (BP) to use abilities and team attacks, and proper timing will allow extra damage to be dealt or even cancel commands completely.

World Destruction for the DS is 70% complete and will hit Japanese shelves this summer. No announcement of a North American release has been made as of this time. For now, check out the game’s official website.
