More Portable Gaming Goodness

A couple of new portable RPGs have been announced for Japan. In the latest issue of Shounen Jump, Square Enix has announced an upcoming DS remake of Final Fantasy Legend II, originally released on the Gameboy in 1990. Details are scarce at present, but the new version will be all in 3D and is due out later this year.

Meanwhile, in the latest issue of Famitsu, Namco Bandia has unveiled .hack//Link for the PSP. Taking place ten years after previous games in the series, Link will apparently be the final game in the franchise. The World, the online MMORPG in which the .hack series takes place, has been upgraded into The World R:X. As in past entires, players will take on the role of a student who becomes a player of The World, this time, Tokio Kuryu. Gameplay will remain similar to past games with one important difference: parties will now consist of only two characters, the player and one CPU-controlled one. Some 33 CPU-controlled characters will be availiable over the course of the game, and there will be cameos from over 100 .hack characters from past games as well as the anime and manga. No release date has been set for .hack//Link, but it’s reported as being 50% complete.

I spent a fair amount of time with Final Fantasy Legend, but I never played the second or third ones. The plot was so-so, but it had some fun mechanics. I enjoyed the ending for what it’s worth, but you can kill the last boss with the one-hit-kill Saw. I can’t remember if you get more than one, but you definitely get one as part of the plot.
