Profile
Just your average, lazy, mildly obsessive-compulsive 20-something gamer/writer, with aspirations of doing either of the latter for pay sometime in the near future. I make no secret of my PC gaming heritage, nor the fact that I use 'heritage' improperly to describe a tendency to favor; I believe the proper word there is proclivity. But I digress.

I do that a lot too, by the way.

Anyhow, until further notice I'm your resident editor person who occasionally deigns to review games, but mostly is just here to keep things running as smoothly and error-free as possible. I have a strong fondness for literature of all kinds, have a man-crush on Warren Spector, and possess a soft spot for those games that offer little more than a really cool idea. I'm also one of the nicest, most laid-back people you're going to find without the aid of "herbal supplements", and I'm told I should be in radio.

If only, my friends. *If only*.

NPCast 07 – Keep Coming Back for More

Sunday, December 7th, 2008 by | Posted in Podcasts

And just like that we’re back with another podcast, starring none other than myself. This time around I pose the question of what keeps us playing those older games, even as newer ones sit on the shelf just itching to be played. (I promise I’ll get back to you soon, Red Alert 3!) Through examples, the answer turns out to be kind of complicated. Have a listen, won’t you? (more…)

Fallout 3 – Staff Review

Thursday, November 27th, 2008 by | Posted in Action RPG Reviews, Features, PC Reviews, Reviews

Whether one was anticipating or dreading Bethesda’s entry into the series, few can deny the popularity of the Fallout RPGs.  In a genre rife with swords, magic, dragons, demons, and other fantasy tropes, the Fallout games took a bold, mature new direction with their post-apocalyptic setting and retro-futuristic style.  In giving Fallout 3 the Oblivion treatment, Bethesda invited many suspicions, some of them valid, as to whether they could maintain the feel of the series and improve on the flaws of their earlier titles.  The answer to both is an emphatic “yes,” followed instantly by several “buts.”  Sadly, the “buts” are likely to be the last thing you remember of Fallout 3. Atlus Announces My World, My Way for DS

Thursday, November 13th, 2008 by | Posted in Game News

Not to be outdone by mod-friendly RPG companies, Atlus has announced the upcoming release of My World, My Way for the Nintendo DS. With the typical role-playing tropes laid on the table, the hook for this title seems to be that the main character, Elise, can effectively remake the world as she sees fit. Quote: “In My World, My Way, I can change the landscape when it doesn’t suit me, make monsters give me more money, and always take the first turn in battle. I can also make enemies go away if I don’t feel like fighting, shut down their magic abilities, and even make quests solve themselves.” (more…)

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition – Staff Review

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 by | Posted in Action RPG Reviews, Features, PC Reviews, Reviews

Game companies usually don’t get do-overs. If there’s a bug or design flaw in a game, it stays there until the end of time. PC games often have the benefit of patches and mod communities, but these are after the fact and don’t always address the most glaring problems. Enter CD Projekt Red, developers of last year’s action RPG The Witcher; a promising but uneven title that, like many PC RPGs, felt like it needed a few more months in the oven. Determined not to let such potential fade into obscurity, CDPR rounded up the cast and crew, cleared their schedules, and took another stab at it with The Witcher: Enhanced Edition. The resulting package – free for download to those who already have the original – could show even crowd-pleasing stalwarts like Atlus a thing or two about keeping fans happy, and should be studied for years as an example of how real game fixes are done. Blurring the Line: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky – Staff Review

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 by | Posted in Action RPG Reviews, Blurring the Line, Features, PC Reviews, Reviews

Hot on the heels of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. – Shadow of Chernobyl comes a prologue hyped to be everything last year’s unpolished, but memorable, first-person adventure was supposed to be. Clear Sky takes us back into the blighted Chernobyl exclusion zone, showing the events immediately preceding Shadow. The new gameplay elements have substantially expanded Clear Sky‘s depth, and the sense of genuine adventure is as compelling as ever. However, the underlying weaknesses from Shadow again rear their ugly heads here, and the game is saddled with a few new setbacks to call its own. (more…)

Suikoden Tierkreis Coming to North America

Thursday, September 18th, 2008 by | Posted in Game News

In a press release Tuesday, Konami announced that the latest installment in their Suikoden RPG series, the DS-bound Suikoden Tierkreis, will be localized for a North American release.  Plot details have been sparse thus far, with suggestions of parallel worlds being involved somehow.  Reportedly, the story begins with all but three of the Stars of Destiny dying in battle, and the survivors are tasked with “resurrecting” the others to take on the One King.  Konami also indicated that Tierkreis will make use of the online capabilities of the DS, allowing players to send some of their characters on quests that others can complete.  No US release date has been posted.
