EffEffstraveganza: FF Agito XIII Renamed, Versus XIII Trailer Revealed

Among the many, many things to come out during Square Enix’s 1st Production Department Premier event was long-awaited Final Fantasy Agito XIII and Versus XIII news.

Agito XIII has resurfaced under the name Final Fantasy Type-0, and is now expected to launch this summer.  The game spans two UMDs, a first for Square Enix, and voice recording is already underway.  Director Hajime Tabata explained the reasoning behind the name change, stating that Type-0 signifies “the starting point for a Final Fantasy series that has a new direction.”  Agito XIII/Type-0 remains a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, featuring the same overall mythology as Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII, and now XIII-2.

Type-0‘s official site, in Japanese, is located hereabouts, and an official trailer is expected on the 27th.

As for Versus XIII, a new official trailer for the game debuted at that same event.  While reprising an earlier conversation between main character Noctis and a woman named Stella, the trailer revealed that Noctis’ father, the current King, has no intention of forfeiting his throne: “My name will go down in history as the final King.”  Gameplay and battle demonstrations followed, with Noctis leading his group out of the dinner party as soldiers stormed the room and attacked.

Although no other characters were named, the trailer showed Noctis with a full party.  Apart from the expected use of guns and swords, some sequences showed the player boarding a mech suit and a tank, suggesting a vehicular extension to combat.  The trailer ended at this point, with a postscript stating that the game will remain a PS3 exclusive for the time being.

As with Type-0, Versus XIII‘s trailer will be hosted on the official site starting the 27th.
