Let see... I've been gaming since the NES era and my first RPG experience dates back to the days when Dragon Quest I was still known as Dragon Warrior I. I studied English literature at school and after obtaining a nice, shiny degree I now do wordprocessing work. Thrilling stuff.

I'm a fan of RPGs and of writing so this is a good chance to combine the two. When I'm not playing games (or writing about them) I can frequently be found reading, writing, wasting copious amounts of time on the internet, and taking beginner Japanese classes.

True Games and Petroglyph Begin New Myth

True Games and Petroglyph announced today that they have teamed up to work on Mytheon, a free-to-play MMO, combining strategy and RPG elements that will rely on mirco-transactions for income. The game is set in a mythological world where heroes wil have to battle gods in order to restore freedom to mortals. The game begins with Grecian-inspired environments and adventures but also draws on numerous other mythologies. Gameplay will revolve round the use of Power Stones, which will have a variety of uses and effects and allow players to summon creatures, use magic, and set traps. Mytheon will have Group Play modes and PvP modes.

Mytheon is due out in the fall 2009. Players who are interested can sign up for updates at the official site.

Europe Goes Questing This Spring

Square Enix announced today that the DS remake of Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest: Hand of the Heavenly Bride will be heading to Europe and other PAL territories this coming spring. It also confirmed the upcoming third part of the Zenithia trilogy, Dragon Quest: Realms of Reverie, though it’s listed only as “coming soon” and no specifics are give about a North American or PAL release.

The Witcher Comes to Consoles

Gamers who were intrigued by The Witcher but didn’t feel their PCs were up to snuff will now have a chance to pick up the game for themselves. Atari and CD Projekt RED officially announced today that The Witcher will be coming to the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 as The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf. It will see worldwide release in autumn 2009.

Suikoden Wanders Worlds This Spring

Suikoden fans should get out their calendars now because Suikoden: Tierkreis for the Nintendo DS is officially headed to North America this coming March. Along with news of the release window came some details regarding the game’s plot. The story is set in the “Million World universe.” During the course of the story, players will find themselves traveling to parallel worlds and encountering a wide variety of characters and cultures.

Tierkreis also makes unique use of Wi-Fi. Players can send their characters on quests via Wi-Fi, which will be completed by other Wi-Fi users. Upon completion of the quest the player’s party will return with new items and abilities. Tierkreis features animated cutscenes and voiceovers, and, of course, will center around finding the 108 Stars of Destiny.

Not-Quite-Last Remnant this December

Square Enix today released some details regarding upcoming downloadable content for Last Remnant for the Xbox 360. The four download packs are all due out in December and three of them are free. The free downloads consist of two packs providing more challenging guild quests and another offering up a new dungeon. A pack including new battle formations will also be available for 100 points.

Disney Offers Up More Critters

Fans of the Spectrobes sequel, Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals can now get their hands on eight new critters. Chosen by the Japanese creators of the Spectrobes, the creatures are all level forty and are available via the game’s Wi-Fi feature. Players can gather ten points per week by using Wi-Fi, and each of the creatures costs one point. Up for grabs are: Komanoto, Hapazoa, Zaamaru, Rygazelle, Masetosu, Sametosu, Montrados, and Inkaflare.

More Fallout for the Holidays

Players who can’t get enough of Fallout 3 in all its gory glory will soon have more to look forward to. Bethesda Softworks announced today upcoming downloadable content and editing tools. The official Fallout 3 editor, the ironically named Garden of Eden Creation Kit aka G.E.C.K., will be available for free this December. It will enable to player to edit and/or create new buildings, characters, enemies, dialogue, etc.

Three new downloads will feature new quests and content. The first will be available in January 2009 and the others in February and March. So far information on the downloads is limited to quest summaries: (more…)

Silicon Knights announced today that the soundtrack for Too Human is now avialable for purchase on Amazon.com, iTunes, and Bestbuy.com. It features twenty tracks that range from orchestral to electronic/metal and is available for a recommended retail price of $15.98.

The Dawn of a New Legend

Dreamatrix Studios, a Croatian developer, today announced their upcoming PC RPG, Legends of Dawn. It will be an action RPG with a fantasy setting. Players can choose to play as a male or female and will have the choice of three races:  Human, Elf, or Danian. In addition, profession and skills will also be chosen by the player. The game also boasts of easy to use world editor tools.

No release date has yet been announced. The game already has an official site but so far there’s only the game’s logo.

Final Fantasy XI to Add On Three Add-Ons

Square Enix announced today that it will be release three online expansion for Final Fantasy XI. Unlike past expansions, these will only be made available via digital download.

Masato Kato, who worked on the original Final Fantasy XI storyline as well as the scenarios for numerous other Square Enix RPGs including Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, is in charge of the scenario for the expansions. Tabula Rasa to Be Razed

NCsoft officially announced today that its sci-fi MMORPG Tabula Rasa will be shut down on February 28, 2009. The game will turn free-to-play from January 10 until the final curtain call.

World of Warcraft Shatters Records… Again

Blizzard Entertainment today released the numbers for World or Warcraft‘s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. The game sold 2.8 million in its first twenty-four hours, so it’s now officially the faststest-selling PC game ever, beating out its younger brother The Burning Crusade by some 400,000 copies.

Namco Bandai has announced Summon Night X: Tears Crown for the Nintendo DS in the latest issue of V-Jump. Not much is known about the game at present except that it’s expected to be released on February 12 in Japan.

Konami Brings Magical Magic to DS

Konami announced today the development of Little Magician’s Magic Adventure for the Nintendo DS. The game combines RPG action and simulation elements. As the name suggests, players take on the role of a young magician attending the Magic Academy. Action will occur in real-time at the academy where players will attend classes, master spells and abilities, and form bonds. Bonds can be formed with any of the 150 characters in the game and the choices players make will affect what abilities they learn and what adventures are opened up to them. In addition, every week the young magicians will be tested, and the way players choose to complete the game’s 52 quests will also affect how the story plays out. (more…)
