Kingdom Hearts: 3DS Coming to North America and Europe in 2012

Square Enix has announced that Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance will see a release in North America and Europe. Although there was little doubt the title would launch in those regions – it was at E3 2010, after all – the official announcement indicates the game will be out sometime in 2012, presumably following the Japanese release in March.

What Happened This Week – Zynga All the Way

All right, back in business!  Just in time to let you all know that, naturally, there will not be a podcast on Christmas Day.  Enjoy the holidays everyone, and I’ll see you all in the new year!  Until then let us dig into the bigger happenings this week (and 2011 in general), including the following:

  • Zynga went public and entered its first day of trading, starting at $10/share and never quite getting higher.  You may want to get popcorn for this.
  • Nintendo partnered with the Louvre to use its 3DS as an interactive display guide.  Yes, that Louvre.
  • Meanwhile, DJ Deadmau5 lost and then recovered pretended to lose a demo PS Vita in a cab, while a boat named the PlayStation Vita was capsized at sea.  What’s the over/under on these being roundabout marketing schemes versus ill omens?
  • Square Enix got hacked, with the scope of the theft not known but the company certain no credit card information was leaked.  Affected users were heard to collectively say “Oh no, not again.”
  • CD Projekt pursued Witcher 2 pirates, stating that being anti-DRM and anti-piracy aren’t mutually exclusive.  I am forced to conclude they are trying to confuse the internet, and it’s working.
  • 2011 roundup: my own Top 5 for major events in the gaming industry, from the awesome to the shocking to the just plain sad.
  • Naughty Dog claims The Last of Us will have a heavy story focus (oh, boy), Pokemon partakes in a most unusual crossover, and much more!

What Happened This Week – Holiday Headaches Redux

Did I say tomorrow? Funny thing, I totally meant Tuesday, because I most certainly did not spend all day watching Zynga on a stock ticker with a bottle of whiskey chanting “Plum-met! Plum-met! Plum-met!”

Well, okay, maybe I did that too. Actually it’s been a rough day and recording isn’t going as smoothly as I’d hoped. The episode’ll be up tomorrow. Seriously, sorry about this, folks. ’tis the season, and the hazards of recording a show during the holidays. Anyway, see you then!

Namco Bandai Announces Tales Preorder Raffle Bonus

Amidst anime/manga festival Jump Festa, Namco Bandai revealed that preorders of Tales of Innocence R or Tales of the Heroes Twin Brave will contain a special product code. This code, once redeemed, enters the holder into a raffle for 2012’s Tales of Festival event.

Did not see that one coming, no sir.

Dragon Quest X Beta Dated for “Time Period of Chocolate”

Also at Jump Festa, Dragon Quest X producer Yosuke Saito made a somewhat vague comment on when the beta would be ready. According to Saito, the beta test will begin around “the time period of chocolate.” Barring some other holiday that anime has not explained to me, it’s believed he means either Valentine’s Day or White Day; February 14 or March 14.

What Happened This Week – Holiday Headaches

Greetings, all! Tragically, What Happened This Week has been delayed until tomorrow night thanks to treachery most foul. Or maybe I was busy getting shopping done, trying to return stuff, getting dragged to a party, and watching the NFL go topsy-turvy. Yeah, it’s that second thing. My apologies.

We’ll have the episode up and ready by tomorrow night. Until then, let us bask in the joy of watching ESPN ask where Tim Tebow’s god is now. Oh, you know they’re thinking it.

Hacking Attempt Prompts Suspension of Square Enix Members Service

It wouldn’t be 2011 without one more hacking attempt, or so it would seem. Square Enix has temporarily shut down its members service, announcing that someone gained unauthorized access to a server containing user data. The scope of the hack, and the data at risk, is not yet known.

Square Enix maintains there is “no possibility” that credit card information was stolen, and that the affected server only held details for US and Japanese free members.

Skyward Sword players have reported a game-breaking bug for doing certain events out of sequence, preventing them from finishing and forcing a restart. In response, Nintendo plans to release a program to fix save games accordingly. The program will be downloadable through Wiis connected to the internet, while players unable to connect can send either their SD card or Wii in to have it fixed directly.

The release date for the patch is not yet known. In the meantime the issue can be avoided by sticking to a certain sequence, which can be read in full here.

Pokemon/Nobunaga’s Ambition Crossover Announced, Bewildering Many

In an apparent bid to claim the title of “least expected announcement of the year,” Pokemon is being crossed over with Nobunaga’s Ambition, a Tecmo Koei series of strategy games set in Japan’s Sengoku period. The so-named Pokemon + Nobunaga’s Ambition is set for a DS release sometime next year, though apart from featuring characters from both franchises little was revealed during the announcement.

All I can say is, it’s a shame this didn’t come out sometime in mid-2006. It would’ve been a perfect follow-up to a certain notorious press conference that spawned numerous misconceptions about feudal Japan.

Mass Media 12/16/11

It’s weird to be seeing DLC for a game that’s not even released here yet, but that’s what we’ve got with Final Fantasy XIII-2: Omega DLC media, not to mention some Frontier Gate, Dragon Quest X, Shining blade, and Lord of Apocalypse.

Type-0 Staff Take Q’s, Give A’s

At a recent retailer event, Final Fantasy Type-0 director Hajime Tabata answered fan questions regarding the game and the series. While discussing a possible sequel to Type-0, he stated “we aren’t thinking about having it directly continue the story.” A direct sequel is still in consideration however, and the various Final Fantasy VII entries were used as as comparisons. Tabata specifically wants to make titles that leave room for future story developments.

When asked about the card-themed names of the characters, he responded that the characters were initially planned to have real ones. The coded names were left in however, largely to add mystery to the characters. The Vita version was also brought up, and producer/fellow attendee Shinji Hashimoto indicated they’re looking into making Type 0 compatible with the UMD Passport program.

Future Zelda Games to Use Skyward Sword’s Motion Controls, Says Producer

In an interview with Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine revealed that future Zelda games will incorporate mechanics like those in Skyward Sword. “I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now,” says Aonuma, “so I think that these controls will be used in future Zelda titles, too.”

Bastion to Receive Free DLC, Google Chrome-Compatible Version

Indie RPG Bastion is getting some interesting new additions, starting with a version playable entirely through Google Chrome. For $14.99 at the Chrome Web Store, and a bit of preloading, you can fire the game up straight through the browser. A demo is available for testing if you’re curious.

On top of this, developer Supergiant Games will be releasing free DLC for the game. Dubbed Stranger’s Dream, the content will include new game modes and a sequence available after completing the game; the latter, Who Knows Where, provides additional backstory about the game world.

Steam-based players will get the update automatically, while distribution methods for non-Steam versions are still being worked out. Unfortunately, Microsoft policies require that 360 DLC be priced, so 360 players will have to spend 80 MS points to update.

Skyrim Approaching Total Sales of Oblivion

NPD Group has just revealed the numbers for November game sales, among which is the news that Skyrim was the second-best selling game of that month. More to the point, Skyrim is just half a million shy of exceeding the lifetime sales of its predecessor, Oblivion. As a point of reference, Oblivion first hit shelves in March of 2006. It has been speculated the reason has to do with Bethesda improving it’s customer segment penetration.
