Let see... I've been gaming since the NES era and my first RPG experience dates back to the days when Dragon Quest I was still known as Dragon Warrior I. I studied English literature at school and after obtaining a nice, shiny degree I now do wordprocessing work. Thrilling stuff.

I'm a fan of RPGs and of writing so this is a good chance to combine the two. When I'm not playing games (or writing about them) I can frequently be found reading, writing, wasting copious amounts of time on the internet, and taking beginner Japanese classes.

Phantom Brave Wii Confirmed for North America

Late last December, a Wii remake of Phantom Brave (orginally for the PlayStation 2) was unveiled in Famitsu magazine. Today NIS America confirmed that it will be headed to North American shores this June.

Two More Dated for PAL

European gamers can add a couple more dates to their calendar. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time will ship out for Wii and DS on March 27 while Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume will be headed to DS screens on April 3.

More Gaming On the Go This Week

North American gamers can pick up some portable gaming this week. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, both DS remakes of games that never made it overseas until now, hit store shelves today. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is rated E for Everyone while Dragon Quest V is rated E10+. The PSP meanwhile is getting some action, dood, in the form of Prinny: Can I really be the Hero, which is rated T for Teen.

The Dark Spire Gets Goodies

Atlus has been handing out goodies left and right lately and the upcoming release of The Dark Spire is no exception. Fans who pre-order the game will get a bonus soundtrack. Since the game features two play modes, “contemporary” and “retro,” each of which will have its own music, the soundtrack will feature a mix of both and will include 24 tracks. (more…)

Good News, Bad News from Bioware

Mass Effect fans can now rejoice as Electronic Arts announced today that Mass Effect 2 is expected for a 2010 release. Dragon Age: Origin fans, however, may need a tissue: Bioware, the studio responsible for Mass Effect and its upcoming sequel, announced today that the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins will be delayed. Originally due out in March, Dragon Age: Origins has been pushed back to late 2009 to be released simultaneously with the console versions of the game.

Europe Gets Last Hope, North America Gets Black Sigil

We have a trickle of news today. Square Enix has announced that PAL territories will be getting Star Ocean: The Last Hope for the Xbox 360 sometime this spring. It’s also been confirmed that Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled for the Nintendo DS will be headed to North American retailers on March 17. The SNES-era inspired game been keeping under the radar of late, but those who are curious can find some screenshots and trailers on Graffiti Entertainment’s website.

Legacy of Ys Books I & II to Be Fashionably Late

If you were planning on picking up Legacy of Ys Books I & II for the Nintendo DS as a Valentine’s Day present for your special someone then you’ll have to change your plans. The game has been pushed back from February 10 to February 24. It will, however, be packaged as a “premium boxed set” including a soundtrack CD.

Clocks Tick, Screens Appear

While the counter is still counting down on the North American Final Fantasy XIII site, the Japanese site has added some new goodies for eager fans. Screenshots have been added to the “character” section of the site, providing a closer look at the four cast members introduced so far. The “trailers” tab also features the same countdown clock as the one on the North American site. According to the clock we can expect the trailer on Wednesday, January 28.

DS Nabs Two More Titles

Another pair of RPGs is headed to the RPG hub of the past year, namely the Nintendo DS. First up Capcom has announced that Mega Man Star Force 3 is due out in the summer of 2009 in North America. Two versions of the game, “Black Ace” and “Red Joker,” will be available, each with unique items that can be shared with a friend via Nintendo Wi-Fi. Like previous iterations of the series, it will be a an action RPG in which players will travel between the real world and a virtual world where they will do battle using “battle cards.” The game also introduces “Noise Changes,” enhancements that will give Mega Man new special forms and abilities. Mass Effect Now More Massive

It looks like those who’ve yet to pick up Mass Effect, the sci-fi RPG for the Xbox 360, will have some extra incentive to do so. Bioware will be releasing a two-disc edition of the game that will include Bring Down the Sky, the DLC previously released on Xbox Live and later on PC. GameStop has listed it for $19.99 with a February 10 release.

Galactrix Demo A-Go

PuzzleQuest fans can now get a sneak peek at the upcoming addition to the series, PuzzleQuest Galactrix. A playable demo is now available on the game’s site. The game itself will available on PC, Nintendo DS, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network with the DS version due out on February 24.

Final Fantasy XIII… Give It Another Year or So

Square Enix President Yoichi Wada had a chat with Reuters today about the state of the company. Square Enix performed well over the holidays in spite of the slowing economy and the company expects to meet their budget forecast up to March.

The interview also revealed that Final Fantasy XIII is planned for a 2009 release in Japan. The North American release will follow in April 2010 or sometime after that. It was also confirmed that the game will be a PlayStation 3 exclusive in Japan but will see both a PS3 and Xbox 360 release overseas.

More Portable Gaming Goodness

A couple of new portable RPGs have been announced for Japan. In the latest issue of Shounen Jump, Square Enix has announced an upcoming DS remake of Final Fantasy Legend II, originally released on the Gameboy in 1990. Details are scarce at present, but the new version will be all in 3D and is due out later this year. (more…)

Conan Axes Servers

Though Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures had some initial success, having sold one million copies in its first month and topping PC charts, that success seems to have been short lived. Funcom has announced that it will be slashing its total number of servers from 49 to 18. The North American and Oceanic regions will go from 24 to 6. European servers will also be cut down to twelve, with only 4 English servers remaining of the original 13.
