Game Changers: Volume 19 – Mass Effect

To be a game changer, a game doesn’t necessarily have to introduce a revolutionary change in gameplay, graphics, or interaction. Sometimes, all it takes to make an impact on the development of RPGs is to turn to one of the most basic impulses of human life: sexuality. Mass Effect wasn’t the first game to include sexuality, but it certainly went farther than most had before.

Strategy Session – Competitive Pokemon XI: Zapdos

This week, we’ll be taking a look at one of the big legendaries of the first generation, part of the elemental trio that forms R/B/Y‘s big triumverate, and one of my favorite stall critters ever. This birdie is surprisingly flexible, able to play defensive roles while still packing quite a punch. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Zapdos.

Mass Media 08/08/09

In Wild Arms 5 there is a shop that lets you exchange experience levels for items and equipment. It’s run by the vampire chick from 2, who refers to it as exchanging your life force for items. The lesson here is that Wild Arms 2 always comes back to bite you.

Final Fantasy XIV Site Launched, Nations Named

On top of the information about Final Fantasy XIV‘s job and quest system, Square Enix has recently started to release information about Eorzea’s three city-states: Ul’dah, Gridania, and Limsa Lominsa. Constructed from the remnants of ships on a series of small islands, Limsa Lominsa boasts a powerful navy, named the Knights of the Barracuda. With an economy dependent on fishing, shipping, and shipbuilding, the city-state appears to have a vested interest in keeping control over the high seas. Other nations suspect, however, that the Knights are collaborating with pirate groups operating within Limsa Lominsa’s waters.

Further details and artwork are available on Final Fantasy XIV‘s website, located here. Information about Ul’dah and Gridania has not yet been posted.

NPCast XI-2: This is Three Chocobo! Waaaaaark!

Radio Free Jeuno returns! It’s been over two weeks since the update alongside the release of A Moogle Kupo d’Etat, and we’ve had time to partially digest the changes both have brought. Our impressions: mixed, to be charitable. Join Nerdboy, Alethea, and myself as we discuss the new things lurking about the wilds of Vana’Diel. Also, Nerdboy assaults the elderly. Like, a lot. Eight times.

We are accepting mailbag requests for a Q&A session in our next podcast, so please, fire off those comments and feedback… things! Whatever the plural noun form of feedback is. FFXI stuff, general stuff, questions about fanfiction that I wrote when I was young and stupid two weeks ago, it’s all good. Lay it on us, we’ll answer it.

In the latest issue of Famitsu, Final Fantasy XIV director Nobuaki Komoto spilled some of the beans behind the series’ next entry into online roleplaying. Gamers Find Resonance of Fate’s Lack of English Disturbing

The upcoming Sega/Tri-Ace RPG Resonance of Fate will not feature a full English voice track. Sega localization producer Jun Yoshino states that the game will have language options, but some lines for the English option will be left as text-only to minimize the delay between Japanese and western releases. Apparently, not doing some of the work means less work is needed.

Resonance of Fate is scheduled for a winter 2009 release in Japan, with the western versions hitting US and European markets early in 2010.

Wizardry Finds New Life on the PS3

Acquire have recently, well, acquired the rights to the long-running PC RPG series Wizardry, and are bringing the next title in the series to the Playstation 3. Wizardry: Dungeon of the Imprisoned Souls – a dungeon being a good place to put imprisoned things, naturally – will be released this fall in Japan, downloadable through the Playstation store.

No information is available about a possible Western release.

Game Changers: Volume 18 – Dragon Quest VIII

Those of us who remember the 1980s and the early days of console gaming can probably recall at one point or another being puzzled by the text we saw appearing in white block letters on the screen before us. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link had one of these classic moments. You, the hapless player, send Link into a house to gather information, and the NPC, with perfect aplomb, announces that, “I AM ERROR.” To which most players responded, “I am confused.” If you never got to experience this, one of the high points in the history of gaming localizations, I have procured for you a shiny screenshot. Behold! The fellow’s name would better have been romanized as “Errol.” But you see, the Japanese language doesn’t distinguish between “r” and “l” as we do and you can see for yourself the results of a poor translation.

Resonance of Fate Release: Europe and North America Ordered to Share

One made the 32X, one’s responsible for the Dinner Dance. They’re cops.

Ahem. Sega and Tri-Ace have announced that their upcoming sci-fi RPG Resonance of Fate will hit European and North American markets simultaneously. Jun Yoshino, localization producer for Sega Europe, further stated that the release gap between the Japanese and western markets “will be as small as possible.” Resonance of Fate is slated for a fourth quarter release in Japan, with the EU/NA release sometime next year.

Mass Media 08/02/09

Y’know, I’m not much of a Japanophile. Not really. I’d like to visit the place, trying to learn to speak the language, maybe watch an anime or two – they keep breaking my heart, but I keep giving them chances, it’s like some sick relationship that just won’t die. But I can say with a straight face that Vocaloid is one of the best things they’ve ever made.

Seriously, Miku can de-angst the most hardened man in time. Oh, you might balk at it initially, but she finds a way in. She finds a way.

But enough about me, let’s talk media. In today’s update: Disgaea 3 DLC, Summon Night: Tear’s Crown, Ys Seven, Princess Antiphona’s Hymn: Angel’s Score Op.A, and Blood of Bahamut. Observe:

Strategy Session – Competitive Pokemon X: Ampharos

This week, we’ll be looking at the anti-Electric Electric-type Pokemon, Ampharos. This mutated sheep hasn’t been getting a lot of respect of late, dropping down to the Never Used tier, so we’re here to clean Amphy up a bit, polish up that rubbery hide, and present it as a shining example of a durable Electric.
