Valkyria Chronicles 2 to Sport Familiar Faces

Not content with sending only more youngsters to fight in Not!Europe, Valkyria Chronicles 2 has seen fit to pull familiar characters back into action. Former frontman Welkin, sometimes known as Fishy Artist McSketcherson, and his pal Alicia are back as playable characters, alongside a character from the anime (Lamarre) and others from the comic.

Strategy Session – Competitive Pokemon XVI: Arceus

Just this past week, Pokemon players finally got a first-hand look at the last of this generation’s event creatures; the great and powerful Arceus. Although what the Arceus players have access to is saddled with some unfortunate restrictions — it’s only available at Lv. 100, which makes it impossible to EV train beyond the vitamin stage — today we’re going to be looking at the full strength of this impressive critter.

Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days – Staff Review

Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days continues the recent trend of PSP rereleases, retooling Disgaea 2 and dropping it onto Sony’s handheld with some new features. Although it adds some interesting new content, including an epilogue starring Axel, Dark Hero Days lacks some of the wit and energy that made Disgaea so much fun, at least in the plot department. It doesn’t make too many changes to the Disgaea combat system, and most, if not all, of the really new content introduced for this port is available only after completing the mainline quest, meaning this port will probably be a little dull for gamers who have already sucked the marrow out of the game’s PS2 iteration.

Square Enix Revives Lufia, Still No Hope for Aerith

Square Enix has announced via Famitsu that it will be reviving Taito’s Estpolis series, also known as the Lufia series in North America. The new game, known only as Estpolis, is being developed by the same team that created the first game in the series back in 1993. The game’s logo includes the words “The Lands Cursed by the Gods,” which may or may not be a subtitle for the game.

The release date and the platform haven’t been announced, but more information will be available in next week’s issue of Famitsu.

Strategy Session – Dragonica Online, Part IV

Probably the most heavily populated class in Dragonica Online, Thieves sport high agility, good critical rates and evasion, balanced out by some spectacular fragility and a somewhat single-minded playstyle. Thieves can be promoted to Tricksters, which focus on pure offense and area of effect attacks, or Assassins, a more balanced class that incorporates the blocking and evasion abilities of Knights while still maintaining a powerful offense.

Atlus: What a Long, Strange Journey It’s Going to Be

Professional niche-fillers Atlus announced today that Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey is coming to the Nintendo DS in North America. A first-person sci-fi RPG, Strange Journey centers around unexplained phenomena at the southern pole of the Earth, and a team of specialists is sent into the heart of the mysterious, growing black void to find out what’s going on. As per usual, players will have the option of doing battle with, negotiating, or bribing various monsters along the way. Here’s hoping that demons from another plane of existence take AmEx.

Further information is available on the official website. Strange Journey is slated for a March 10, 2010 release.

Mass Effect 2 Collector’s Edition: More Than You Bargained For

Hardly a company to release a game without a special, costs-more-but-includes-various-goodies version, Bioware recently announced the upcoming Mass Effect 2 will be available in both standard retail and Collector’s Edition flavors. The CE will feature a 48-page “Art of Mass Effect 2” book, the first issue of the Mass Effect: Redemption comic book, a bonus behind-the-scenes DVD, and special in-game weapons and armor.

The Collector’s Edition is available for preorder through the Mass Effect 2 website, and the game is scheduled for a simultaneous PC/360 launch on January 26, 2010. Still waiting on that Tali romance option, Bioware. Still waiting.

Square Rolls Out More FFXIII Summons

Final Fantasy XIII‘s Japanese website has just been updated with artwork for two new summons. Brynhildr, a giant, firey warrior/mecha-thing, doubles as Sazh’s ride, while recurring summon Bahamut morphs into a bipedal mount for Oerba.

When asked where they procured the green acid and whether they have any to share, Square-Enix spokespeople did not reply.

Atelier Annie – Staff Review

Part of the joy of writing for an RPG-centric website is that I can draw comparisons to some rather eclectic, obscure, and niche material, knowing that the reader will be able to follow my gist. It’s an amazing power, and one that I try to wield judiciously and in the name of good. However, Atelier Annie makes me wish that, rather than your standard RPG fare, my readers were versed in the equally insular world of German boardgames, particularly resource-management-centric, action-limited strategy titles such as Agricola, Stone Age, and Settlers of Catan. I’d probably have a much easier time of describing the cost/reward analyses, transportation efficiency concerns, and development strategies intrinsic to this Gust-developed JRPG. In lieu of such assumption, though, just take my word for it: Atelier Annie is an awesome, horizon-expanding game.

Strategy Session – Dragonica Online, Part III

This week, we’ll be taking a look at the fastest class available on Dragonica Online; the Archer. The Archer is a bit of an odd bird, combining high movement speed and agility with extremely long cooldown for their most powerful attacks. Archers split off into the mechanically-inclined Ranger and the Hunter, which focuses more on animal-based area of effect attacks. Rangers tend to have more raw power and pack some unusual attacks, but Hunters, who are better able to deal with large groups of foes, tend to be more popular.

Famitsu Showcases Lunar PSP’s Four Heroes Scenario

Dragon Age Social Network Takes Comparing Achievements Up a Notch

A chunk of our Halloween content has been eaten by zombies. Given the nature of the zombie virus, we expect it to reanimate in a matter of hours… after which it will have to be put down again. RandomNPC’s Zombie Pacification Division apologizes for the inconvenience.

In any case, BioWare has released details of a social networking feature for the upcoming Dragon Age: Origins. This network will record and store key information about each player’s achievements, character builds, decisions in the story, and even screenshots, to be shared with other players across platforms.
